Thinly-sliced Trees

(#web #technology)
New layout. New blogging strategy. New energy.
For about a year, now, I've had a feeling that blogs could be dying—not the case. A resurgence is coming. The Internet as we know it, dying? Now, that's a different story. The architecture and user habits of the current web are quickly becoming stale. As the Apples and Googles continues to bring together the best minds of the times—pushing out cheaper pocket brains and robustly simple netbooks—stiffly sitting in front of a computer surfing will be like that ancient time of sitting on a porch reading those rolled-up, rubberbanded, thinly-sliced trees our parents use to read on Sunday mornings. Blogs will have their place in the new Web—they just desperately need new branding (and a new name).

Six Sentences—"Wilted"

Stay or go—just stop wasting space in the middle. We're given one shot; what's your point if not to color your time in shades of strength and strokes of pain? Carry on, people, there's nothing to see here, but a man who crept from one broken dream to another, stuck in molded memories of V-signs and wilted flowers. That's your legacy? Fight. Then, fight again.

Six Sentence Writing Exercise—"The Wanted-Man's Shack"

Describe what you see in this photo in six sentences.
For decades now, "The Wanted-Man's Shack" had been occupied by one ambitious transient after another. The redwooded escape was bare of hanging idols or cushioned distractions; a mattress, a knife, a blanket—only the essentials made up the tired space. Nailed to the door, were the rules: the playbook to change. A week is all it took. A forgotten drifter walks in; a clean slate walks out.

Perfectly Complicated

I need to write more. I've lost sight of what this space represents: an avenue to assemble broken thoughts; a space dedicated to everything and nothing; a place to bleed.

Birth is knocking on the doors of our routine; life is about to get perfectly complicated. I can't stop thinking about whether she'll get my blue eyes, or my pointy nose, or my almost-normal left ear. Or will she get Emilia's Spanish eyes or her perfect brown hair? I can't wait to meet her. She's part of our nights already--kicking her way into our evening chats--determined to be involved: I'm proud of her already.

Recap of my day's commute through the interwebs...

Video Vault: Journalism on the Brink

Source: Flip the Media
"Journalism faces an unprecedented existentialist crisis, due to the economy, new digital platforms, and dwindling advertising revenues. In collaboration with the Online News Association and the UW Journalism program, we hosted this forward-looking forum on potential future models of news.
The conversation was moderated by Hanson Hosein, a former Emmy Award-winning NBC journalist and now the director of the Master of Communication in Digital Media at the University of Washington.

David Domke, UW Journalism chair and Department of Communication Acting Chair hosted.
Hosein and Domke were joined by:
- Cory Bergman, MSNBC, expert on future of local media through LostRemote.com, MyBallard.com;
- John Cook, ex-PI reporter who has created TechFlash, the go-to source for the Puget Sound tech community;
- Monica Guzman, online reporter at Seattle P-I who has pioneered the effective use of social media tools to share her work;
- Cory Haik, Director of Content at seattletimes.com, who knows how to work through a disaster as NOLA.com managing editor during Katrina; and
- Ross Reynolds, host of Seattle NPR station KUOW’s “The Conversation” and a researcher on public radio as a viable business model."

25 Random Things

I couldn't help but participate in the "25 Random Things" craze on Facebook:

1. I have a SF Giants tattoo on my right shoulder (I went with my mom--desperately needing her hand to squeeze--when I turned 18)

2. My best friend (a.k.a. wifie of almost 5 years!) and I met in a Spanish elevator--while studying abroad in college.

3. I am addicted to quality writing (Top of the Vault: Hemingway and Graham Greene), authentic Hollywood filmmaking (TOV: Singin in the Rain), and skilled acting (TOV: Robert Downey Jr.).

4. Secret hobby: constructing, gluing, and hanging 2000+ piece puzzles.

5. I once got insanely lost in the insanely dangerous backstreets of middle-of-the-night Amsterdam.

6. The older I get the more I realize the need to simplify. I'm talking about simplifying all aspects of life, with the goal of reducing clutter and allowing for the area being simplified to be nourished and strengthened--a cliched goal, but a worthy goal nonetheless.

7. Sometimes I feel bad for my wife because of my nightly ingredients of philosophizing + over analyzing + constant talking = putting her to sleep.

8. I can't stand people who are afraid to take a stance--right or wrong, take the time to have an opinion. Otherwise, what's your point?

9. I'm a fan of blogging: Stagekid

10. One time in college, I was walking the halls--minding my own business--when a fluorescent flyer hanging lop-sided, blinded me as I was trying to get to class: "Auditions: Our Town by Thornton Wilder." Before I knew it, I was spending the next four months as George Gibbs--all 200+ lines.

11. Sometimes I wonder what it would have been like if I'd pursued that opportunity to study at The American Conservatory Theater (ACT) in San Francisco.

12. I don't believe in regrets.

13. I got married in Mil's 400-year-old family home in a tiny village in Spain.

14. I try to buy copies of The Fountainhead whenever I see them in used bookstores; Howard Roark is a character that most people should judge for themselves instead of depending on the verdict of the masses.

15. Best gift I ever received: the complete 60-volume collection of The Great Books--from my wife :)

16. I hate sleeping in; I wish my body could thrive on 5-6 hours of sleep a night; I'm conditioning for such.

17. A person drenched in mystery got me a subscription to The Economist last month--hat tip to anonymous folk; my goal is to read every word, every week, all year.

18. In college, I walked into the Presidents Office, introduced myself, stayed for 20 minutes, and walked out with $50,000+ to cover the rest of my studies.

19. I haven't had soda in 5 years--I'm convinced most of the food and drug companies are out to kill the uneducated and weak.

20. I turn off most movies after 20 minutes because the majority of stuff Hollywood produces in recycled trash.

21. I think Michael Chabon and E. Hemingway should be mentioned in the same breath (hat tip to The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay )

22. Speaking of Hem, my favorite quote: "There is nothing to writing; all you do is sit down at a typewriter and bleed."

23. I'll always remember that weekend, in the village-city of Cuenca, where it became crystal clear that Emilia was the girl I'd spend the rest of my days with.

24. I own six black sweaters that all look the same.

25. Come circa April 7, 2009, I will--without a sliver of doubt--start the journey of being the greatest father in the history of fathers.

Political Video Vault: Inconvenient Debt

I wish G. Beck hadn't signed for millions with Fox News, but I'd listen to his podcast every day if the corporate fat cats were smart enough to broadcast (see MSNBC). While beyond obnoxious (at times), I appreciate Beck's sense of urgency when it comes to finance:
