Thomas Cooney, my English professor and friend, from Saint Mary's has a new article up in the Chronicle:
"To know how things are going in Haiti, stick around at sunset. If all's going well, U.N. representatives and other foreign employees and a handful of privileged Haitians will be chasing the sun down with rum sours; meanwhile the rest of Port-au-Prince wanders the streets looking for a good buy on Prestige beer, and the Mormon missionaries buy fresh fruit at the open-air market. When it's going badly, as it often is, everyone hunkers down for the night: U.N. employees stick to their curfews, tourists with their rum sours stay on the grounds of their hotels, Mormon missionaries in the hotel pools." I absolutely love Thomas' writing style. He's always been my (probably unknowing to him) distant mentor. I hope to work with him again someday in the future.
